BLACK
RIVER HARBOR AND
RECREATION AREA
Located in
the Bessemer
Ranger
District, 12
miles north
of US2 on
County Road
513, this
area is
composed of
three major
recreational
areas: the
Harbor and
adjacent
picnic
ground, the
campground
and the
waterfall
observation
facilities.
The picnic
ground
consists of
a large
mowed park
with picnic
tables and
grills,
swings,
pavilion
with
beautiful
fireplace, a
beautiful
suspension
bridge over
the harbor
area where
you can
cross and
walk out to
the shores
of Lake
Superior to
swim,
collect
rocks, or
walk the
beach.
Access is
also
available to
the North
Country
Hiking
Trail, which
covers 118
miles across
the Ottawa
National
Forest. In
addition,
there are
five major
waterfalls
in this
area, all
within a
four-mile
area with
hiking
trails along
the falls
(North
Country
National
Scenic
Trail) and
observation
decks.
Black River
National
Forest
Scenic Byway
takes you to
the harbor
which is a
beautiful
scenic area
– you’ll
want to have
your camera
with you for
this special
place! This
unique
harbor
facility
boasts
beautiful
stretches of
Lake
Superior
beaches and
docking
facilities. You can take
a walk to
Rainbow
Falls as it
follows the
Black
River.
Charter boat
fishing is
available
with catches
of Coho
Salmon and
Lake Trout.

Little Girls
Point was
named after
an Indian
girl who
died in the
1800’s.
SAXON
HARBOR
The mouth of
the Montreal
River, just
east of the
harbor was
the landing
place of
early
explorers
who made
overland
portages
from this
point to Lac du Flambeau,
Wisconsin.

beautiful
Superior
Falls
nearby.

for fishing
in Wisconsin
or Michigan
waters.
SUNDAY LAKE
Wakefield. One block
North of
M-28 on US 2
intersection
in
Wakefield,
MI. Sunday
Lake offers
Eddy Park, a
nice park
with a
pavilion,
swimming,
picnic
tables,
playground,
camping,
fishing and
boating. You’ll see
many folks
enjoying a
walk around
the lake on
the
boardwalk
platform,
and it's a
beautiful
spot to
watch a
sunset too.
There are 27
campgrounds in
the Ottawa
National Forest
which offer a
wide spectrum of
camping
experiences. All
are accessible
by road and
serve both tent
and trailer
campers. Most
are located on
lakes or streams
and offer
fishing and
swimming
opportunities as
well. Several,
including Bobcat
Lake, Norway
Lake and Tepee
Lake have
beaches with
changing
facilities.
All campground
include picnic
tables, tent
pads, fire
grates and
toiled
facilities. Most
have drinking
water and can
accommodate
trailers up to
22 feet in
length. Only
Blockhouse has
no water supply.
The three
campgrounds with
the most highly
developed
facilities are
Lake Ottawa,
Sylvania
Recreation Area
and Black River.
Each has paved
access roads,
pressurized
water systems,
and flush
toilets. Black
River and Lake
Ottawa also have
trailer dump
stations. No
electricity is
available. The
Sylvania
Recreation Area
has new showers
and a dump
station.
Other
campgrounds
offer more
rustic
facilities and
greater
solitude. Ottawa
campgrounds
range in size
from 3 to 40
sites. Several
campgrounds are
available free
of charge. No
fee is assessed
at Burned Dam,
Robbins Pond,
Matchwood Tower,
Paint River
Forks or
Blockhouse
campgrounds.
Persons 62 years
of age and older
and individuals
with
disabilities can
benefit from a
special discount
Passport
Program.
Most campgrounds
are scheduled to
open by May 15.
Some exceptions
are Bob Lake and
Courtney Lake
campgrounds
which open May
20. Black River
and the drive-in
campground at
the Sylvania
Recreation Area
open May 22.
Most campgrounds
close after
Labor Day
although some
will remain open
into the fall.
